| Forensic Risk Alliance chosen as DOJ’s Binance monitor Global Investigations Review – May 13, 2024 Frances McLeod of Forensic Risk Alliance and Sharon Cohen Levin from Sullivan & Cromwell have won spots for the compliance monitorships US authorities imposed as part of resolutions with cryptocurrency exchange Binance. A Binance spokesperson confirmed the appointments in an emailed statement following GIR’s reporting on McLeod’s selection. “We are committed to collaborating with FinCEN’s selected monitor, Sharon Cohen Levin from Sullivan and Cromwell; and DOJ’s selected monitor, Frances McLeod at Forensic Risk Alliance as we continue working toward becoming the most trusted and secure asset exchange in the world,” the statement read. The three-year monitorships were required as part of Binance’s November 2023 guilty plea for violating US anti-money laundering and sanctions laws, which also levied $4.3 billion in fines. | US, Japan and South Korea Formalise Alliance to Stop Leaks of Critical Technology Global Investigations Review – April 25, 2024 Top US officials gathered with counterparts from Japan and South Korea in Washington, DC for the inaugural meeting of a recently announced alliance among the countries to prevent advanced technology from leaking out to rival nations. The new partnership, dubbed the Disruptive Technology Protection Network, emerged from a summit at Camp David last August that sought to strengthen diplomatic ties between the three countries. The summit took place some six months after the US launched a cross-agency task force to stop advanced technology with potential military uses – such as microchips and artificial intelligence software – from being illegally exported to US foes like Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. “Today’s summit reflects our shared commitment to a critical principle: to combat today’s national security threats, we cannot go it alone,” said US Deputy Attorney General Monaco, addressing delegations from Japan and South Korea from the Great Hall at Main Justice in Washington, DC. Monaco said the US task force has made “great strides” over the last year, making 16 arrests and securing four guilty pleas in cases ranging from sanctions and export control violations to money laundering and trade theft. | Boeing parts supplier discloses SEC probe Global Investigations Review – May 8, 2024 Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems is under investigation by the US Securities Exchange Commission, according to a company filing. The company, which builds fuselage components for Boeing, Airbus and other major aviation companies, disclosed in a 7 May quarterly report that it had received information and document requests related to the Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft that included “subpoenas or examination requests from the SEC”.
